EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS

Educational Projects

We facilitate projects, workshops and courses which educate, inspire and build confidence in creative expression. Our workshops are designed with you in mind: we can tailor workshops to a particular project or curriculum, and respond to the needs of your particular group. We can provide one off sessions, or develop longer projects which teach new skills and develop ceramic artworks over a period of time.

Clay is a very tactile material which is fun to play and experiment with. We can provide the facility for groups to begin touching and forming raw clay, without firing. Alternatively, we can provide workshops which cover the whole ceramic process, by firing your work and applying glazes.

Get in touch to discuss your ideas!

Relief Tiles

In this workshop pupils will learn how to build up a
three-dimensional image onto a clay tile. The tiles can be made individually or
pupils can work on a large clay relief which is later cut into smaller tiles to
display in school or take home.

We can adapt this workshop to provide a cross-curricular
educational opportunity through topic-based learning. Potential themes include
but are not limited to:

Health and food
- Making clay meals to assemble into a healthy banquet!
Cultures and Civilizations– clay portraits from history eg. Vikings, Romans, Ancient Egyptian
sarcophygus and sphynx. Making ancient coins from clay.
Science- Cells, seeds and plants, cross-sections
of the Earth or volcanoes. Making patterned fish.
Geography and nature– Collecting texture samples on an urban/nature walk and making a clay book of discovery, each pupil can take a ceramic page home!

Coil Pots

Coiling clay is one of the most ancient techniques for
forming pots, and is still used today in many cultures. Pupils will learn how
to roll coils and build them up to form a pot. The pots can be decorated with textures or colours, or they can be
turned upside down and made into a fantastic sculpture. Themes can be included
to support the curriculum such as:

History and Civilizations: Greek vases, Roman pots, prehistoric pottery, African pots, face
pots, patterns and designs from around the world.
Sculpture: animal
sculpture, figures, towers and castles.

Pinch Pots

Pinch pots are the most simpleof clay techniques, which we develop
into a multitude of projects for all ages and abilities. They can be stacked,
modelled onto and joined together into imaginative ceramic artworks such as:

Hatching eggs, tortoises, fungi, insects, sea creatures, snakes
and reptiles, birds.
